So, How’s the Final Score Worked Out?

The IELTS has 4 parts:
Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
Each is scored separately on a 0–9 scale.

Your overall score is the average of all four. Then it’s rounded off:

For example:

Listening – 7.5
Reading – 7.0
Writing – 6.5
Speaking – 7.0

Average: (7.5 + 7.0 + 6.5 + 7.0) ÷ 4 = 7.0 overall band

What You Should Keep in Mind

  • Most top universities ask for a minimum overall band and also minimum scores in each section.
  • If you’re applying for PR in Canada or Australia, your score converts to a different scale (like CLB for Canada).
  • Even a small bump—say, from 6.5 to 7.0 in Writing—can lift your total average and help you meet your goal.
