IELTS Exam Format 2025

The IELTS test has four sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. More students now choose the computer-based version, but the structure is the same.

Listening

Listening (30 mins): There are four recordings and 40 questions in this section. You will listen to various accents and audio samples, such as ordinary conversations, group discussions, and monologues. The recordings become increasingly difficult. The computer-based test tends to offer quality headphones, so it is easier to concentrate and listen to the audio clearly, which is particularly useful in detecting nuances and tone variations.

Reading

Reading (60 mins):You’ll get three long passages and need to answer 40 questions. The Academic and General Training versions differ in the type of content and complexity. This section tests your ability to locate key information, follow arguments, and quickly scan through dense text—all within a limited time. Practicing under time pressure really helps here.

Writing

Writing (60 mins): Two tasks in total. Task 1 asks you to describe visual data like graphs or charts (Academic), or write a formal/informal letter (General). Task 2 is an essay where you respond to a point of view or argument. Typing on a computer is faster and cleaner for most students, which is why the computer-based version is becoming more popular.

Speaking

Speaking (11–14 mins): A face-to-face interview with an examiner, broken into three parts. First, you’ll answer general questions about yourself, then give a short speech on a given topic, and finally have a more in-depth discussion. This section hasn’t changed much and remains an interactive, real-time conversation.
