SJSU was established in 1857 by George W. Minns as Minns Evening Normal School in California. It is also one of the oldest institutions in the west coast region and has undergone a lot of changes. In 1972, it qualified for university status as mandated by the board of trustees and Coordinating Council for Higher Education and was renamed California State University, San Jose. In only two years later in 1974, the California legislature changed its name to San José State University, its present name.
