Frequently Asked Question on the SAT

How many questions are on the SAT, and how is it scored?

The SAT consists of 98 questions in total. This includes 54 questions in the Reading and Writing section, which you have 64 minutes to complete, and 44 questions in the Math section, which you have 70 minutes for. Each section is scored on a scale from 200 to 800, giving a total score range of 400 to 1600. Importantly, there is no penalty for incorrect answers.

In comparison to the previous version, the SAT is now 45 minutes shorter (2 hours 14 minutes) and has fewer questions with a time limit of around 1 minute 30 seconds per question. With question difficulty changing according on performance, the test is completely adaptive. The entire Math section is open to calculators, and there is an integrated Desmos graphing calculator. Results are provided in days rather than weeks, and reading sections are shorter.

The SAT is offered seven times a year. Confirmed 2025 test dates include:

  • March 8, 2025
  • May 3, 2025 (registration deadline: April 18, 2025)
  • June 7, 2025 (registration deadline: May 22, 2025)
  • August 23, 2025 (anticipated)
  • October 4, 2025 (anticipated)
  • November 8, 2025 (anticipated)
  • December 6, 2025 (anticipated)

The SAT has no specific rules for who can take it. Even though anyone can sign up, high school students in their 11th or 12th grade usually take the test. There is no maximum age limit, but students under 13 must follow certain steps to register, like registering by mail if they are 12 years old or younger. To register and take the test, you need a government-issued photo ID.

A combination of easy, medium, and hard problems can be found in the first module of the digital SAT, which is section-wise adaptive. The difficulty of the second module depends on how well you perform in the first section. A more difficult second module can boost your score significantly; this is possible by achieving high scores on the first module. Impressive performance in the first section is therefore essential.

The fee to register for the SAT is $68. For eligible applicants from potentially underprivileged economic situations, the College Board offers fee waivers that include free score reporting. You should talk with your school counselor or get in touch with the College Board to find out about eligibility requirements.
